After studying Sports Medicine with The University of Arizona and Pima Community Collage in Tucson, Arizona, Tonya began her studies in massage therapy. She graduated from The Desert Institute of the Healing Arts in April of 1996. As soon as she graduated she embarked on learning the art of LaStone Therapy. She longed to learn more and to share this knowledge with others.
Tonya began her career as a massage therapist at Miraval, a spa and resort in Tucson, Arizona. She was able to introduce LaStone Therapy to a number of Hollywood Stars and help spred the word of this wonderful treatment. She traveled to Hollywood, California to offer LaStone Therapy to Mel Gibson and some of the crew of the movie Lethal Weapon IV. Tonya also performed hydrotherapy and Ayurvedic treatments at the resort. She maintains a small private practice in which she administers LaStone Therapy exclusively.
In 2001 it became necessary for LaStone to create a Two-day workshop in the art of using heated and chilled stones to the body to accommodate the expanding SPA demand for stone massage. Mary Nelson the founder assigned Tonya the job of creating a Two-day SPA course, thus the birth of Simply Stones as Fifty-minute SPA treatment incorporating Geo-thermo-therapy concepts one of the foundations of LaStone Therapy treatments. Since then she has created an Extended for the Simply Stones course and a 1-day course for people who have taken another expression of stone massage. This course is called "Beyond Hot Stones".
